Step into the
YES World of Kamo
Kamogelo “Kamo” Malikane, a young aspiring individual, with an unpredictable range of motions. A young man who is the bridge between those enclosed in spaces of privilege and those exposed to the treacherous terrain of underprivileged backgrounds. His campaign is on the “YES” principle ---YOUTH, ENTREPRENEURSHIP, SPORT!
Jr Cllr Malikane launched his manifesto on 6 April 2024, making him the first Mayoral Candidate to share his manifesto some minutes after his nomination acceptance. This already revealed his valour and great attitude to serve with immediate effect. It also exposed 3 things:

A Junior Councillor hailing from Regions B & D
Bio
From an early age, there was a distinct awareness of being unlike the rest. Raised in a household where warmth and discipline coexisted, it was a common belief among those nearest and dearest that the community played a significant role in upbringing. However, this wasn't just any community – it spanned regions B and D, Jo’burg’s biggest regions, a carousel of locales that defied conformity. Amidst this ever-shifting landscape, fitting into any particular clique proved futile. Each encounter demanded careful consideration, for the amalgam of backgrounds taught one invaluable lesson: never allow circumstances to dictate the narrative of your destiny.
Armed with this insight, the concept of responsibility settled upon the path to destiny like mist. Rather than bemoan the disparity, it was seen as an opportunity, a platform to voice sentiments often muted among the youth. Thus, the decision was made to embrace the role of a community activist, wielding influence where many falter, and etching a narrative uniquely their own.
A Grade 10 learner at St David’s Marist Inanda, this is a leader in the making with a Democratic hand and a coaching approach to leadership. He is inspirational and topical. Some of his leadership and development accolades range from having Provincial Colours in Debating and National Colours in Public Speaking. He is a National Finalist in Debating, a Provincial Champion and Finalist in Debating, a Provincial Champion in Public Speaking, a National Champion in Public Speaking and an esteemed selfless coach in the making.
This young leader has engaged Former President, His Excellency Thabo Mbeki and former First Lady Mrs Zanele Mbeki, Former Minister Geraldine Fraser-Moleketi, Minister of Basic Education Mrs Angie Motshekga, Gauteng MEC of Education Mr Matome Chiloane, Former UN Ambassador Professor Abdoulaye Bathily and The Ambassador of France to South Africa.
A word from Junior Councillor Malikane
Y-E-S! Youth, Entrepreneurship, Sport!
I, Kamo Malikane, a distinguished national debater adorned with provincial colours and a reigning
national public speaking champion, humbly present my visionary manifesto encapsulated by the
acronym Y-E-S: It’s THAT simple!
As a candidate for Junior Mayor, I offer a transformative agenda for the tenure 2024/25 that embodies
the essence of empowerment and progress with intentionality.
Youth: THIS IS US -and MUST BE THE CENTREPIECE!
Central to my platform is the unwavering commitment to elevate the voices and aspirations of the youth in Johannesburg.
I call my Youth Pillar “The Youth’s Plan” --in line with Mayor Gwamanda’s “The People’s Plan” when dealing with IDPs.
It touches on Joburg’s 8 key needs for its Youth according Inside Education (2023):
Mental Health, Education, Substance Abuse, Unemployment, Self-Development, Crime & Violence and Food Security
Entrepreneurship: THIS SKILL IS KEY!
Building on the ethos of innovation and economic self-sufficiency, I advocate for the integration of
in-school entrepreneurship programmes that nurture the entrepreneurial spirit among our youth.
Leveraging my accolades as a national public speaking champion, I will spearhead mentorship
initiatives, facilitate access to resources, and cultivate a culture of creativity and enterprise with the
Dr Richard Maponya Institute for Entrepreneurship and Development.
We will have to support our Youth who are entrepreneurs with workshops and incubations.
Sport: LET US GIVE OUR YOUTH OPPORTUNITIES TO LIVE HEALTHILY
Recognising the intrinsic link between physical well-being and holistic development, I am steadfast in
my commitment to promoting sports and active living within our communities and wards. Through my
experience in competitive debate and public speaking, I understand the value of teamwork, discipline,
and resilience that sport instils -and working together we can continue from the previous cabinet and
succeed in driving a bigger health and sport agenda, Mayor Arabile Maphiri’s Legacy Project of the
Johannesburg Mayor’s Cup. Top of this Agenda is Alexandra Stadium. I have engaged the City’s Sports Office in this regard.
